Activities
In the "Electronics: Radiation Detectors and Low-Noise Electronics" laboratory, the research activities are focused on radiation detectors, X-Ray fluorescence for material analysis, and the electronics for the acquisition and processing of the detector signals. This laboratory arises from the pioneering research activity of Emilio Gatti in the field of radiation detectors and nuclear electronics. In 1983 Emilio Gatti introduced together with Pavel Rehak (Brookhaven National Laboratory, BNL, USA) the concept of the Silicon Drift Detector (SDD). Since then, the group of Politecnico develops semiconductor radiation detectors often based on the concept of SDD. The laboratory develops also a wide variety of instruments based on SDDs to fulfill the requirements of many different experiments in the field of physics and of X and Gamma ray spectroscopy and imaging. The laboratory has become an international reference point in the field of radiation detectors and related instrumentation. Concerning the material analysis, the main focus in on the characterization of materials by means of X-ray based techniques, in particular by means of the X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). Part of the research activity concerns the development of the electronics required for the acquisition and processing of the detector signals. A wide class of VLSI circuits dedicated to the readout and processing of the signals from ionizing radiation detectors and optical photodetectors has been designed, characterized and employed in instrumentation.
Service information
The laboratory is located in via Golgi n. 40 - Leonardo Campus and Via Anzani - Como Campus. It is possible to access the laboratory during the Department opening hours.
