DEIB is consolidating and strengthening its international status, according to the strategic plan of Politecnico di Milano.
In particular, the Department is actively pursuing the internationalization activities related to research, teaching and organization.
The participation of our researchers in international networks of excellence and research projects is constant and strong, as evidenced, for example, by the success rates in European projects and the four ERC Advanced Investigator Grants, two ERC Proof of Concept Grants, and two ERC Starting Grants awarded between 2008 and 2024.
The research activity of the Department is recognized to be of high-profile by international standards that measure research results with top‐quality publications on high‐level scientific journals and conferences. Many groups have relevant international visibility and positioning thanks to a significant number of relevant publications and the participation to various well‐recognized international projects, working groups, and committees.
Also, the number of international patents endorses the role of the department as an international leading research institution.
Several strategic relationships with renowned international universities are active, offering the Italian students the possibility of experiencing a period of time abroad and the foreign students the opportunity to spend part of their education at the Politecnico di Milano. Several exchange programs at Bachelor and Master level are offered, including, for example, the joint Master in Computer Science and Bioengineering with the University of Illinois at Chicago and the double Bachelor program with the Tongji University at Shanghai. Most classes of the Master programs of the Department are offered in English, thereby facilitating the attendance of international students.
Regarding the PhD programs, candidates are selected from high-ranked international universities and their world-wide mobility is supported thanks to agreements with top‐quality institutions.
The department is planning to increase the international faculty by actively exploiting the opportunities provided by Politecnico di Milano for recruiting professors from foreign institutions, to implement both the regular faculty and the temporary visiting lecturers/researchers category, and, through the International Fellowship Research Grants, junior researchers. The new positions are intended both to strengthen sectors in which the department has a leading international role and to explore new research fields that are not yet fully represented in the department scene.
