Silvia Cascianelli is a post-doctoral researcher in the Data Science and Bioinformatics Lab. She earned a PhD in Information Technology with honors (cum laude) at the Politecnico di Milano with her research titled ‘Machine Learning in Oncogenomics: a key to dissecting cancer inner heterogeneity’, carried out under the supervision of Prof. Masseroli.
She received her BSc in Electronics and Computer Science Engineering from Università di Perugia, where she authored a thesis on 'Sensitivity analysis of the signal transduction model in NSCLC cells', and her MSc degree in Computer Science Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, discussing the thesis ‘RNA sequencing-based computational subtyping of breast cancer for clinical outcome prediction’. She has co-authored nearly 30 publications, including journal articles, conference papers, and volume chapters in Omics Data Science and Computational Oncogenomics fields, and has co-supervised over ten M.Sc. theses. Her research interests span Machine Learning, Data Science, Complex Networks and Bioinformatics with a focus on applications in computational biology, oncogenomics and translational research. She has been a visiting researcher in Prof. Ciriello's Computational Systems Oncology lab at the University of Lausanne and has collaborated with Alliance Against Cancer, the Italian Oncology Network. She also co-organized the 3rd International Workshop on Web Applications for Life Sciences in 2024, and will be among the organizers and general chairs of the 20th Conference on Computational Intelligence methods for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (CIBB2025) in 2025. She is currently involved in the Italian PRIN 2022 ARTUSI (Actionable Reciprocal TUmour-Stroma Interactions) and collaborates with MIND (the joint Laboratory of coMputational multI-omics of Neurological Disorders of the Politecnico di Milano and the Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta - IRCCS), and with the Oncogenomics group led by Prof. Medico at the Candiolo Cancer Institute - IRCCS (Torino).
