MUSICARE - MUltiSectoral Integrative approaches to CArdiac care

Horizon 2020

DEIB Role: Coordinator

Length: 48 months

Start date: 2015-01-01

Project abstract

MUSICARE is proposed by a team of universities, companies and hospitals from 4 EU countries (Italy, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Belgium) coordinated by our group. The main scope of MUSICA is to structure a new trans-sectoral and multidisciplinary network capable of developing research and technology with no barriers between academia, industries and clinicians in the cardiac arena, and of shaping young researchers with a novel and truly multidisciplinary mindset, capable of developing clinical- and business-oriented technology including tools for the advancement of base knowledge.
The project is closed.

Heart on a chip – a. Schematic drawing of heart-on-a-chip device. Beating heart-on-a-chip platform layout consists of a culture chamber for housing cell-laden hydrogel, confined between two arrays of posts; lateral medium channels and a bottom pressurized chamber, which serves to provide cells with a controlled mechanical actuation. b. Microphotograph of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) culture. NRCMs embedded in fibrin gel were cultured for 7 days under cyclic mechanical stimulation (10% uniaxial strain, 1Hz frequency) to mimic the the systolic and diastolic phase that cardiomyocyte experience in native beating heart. A novel cantilever-based approach for contractility and force measurements of 3D engineered cardiac microtissue was here developed.
