Pierpaolo Boffi was born in 1966 at Voghera (PV). In 1991, he graduated in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and in 1995 he received his Ph.D degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the same University. From 1995 to 2005 he worked as researcher with CoreCom (Consortium for Research in Optical Processing and Switching Milan), a research center between Politecnico di Milano and Pirelli Cables and Systems, where in 1999 he became in charge of research activities in “Optical Systems” Area. From 2005 to 2008, year of consortium closure, he remained Scientific Assistant. During 1997 he was visiting researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena – California (USA). Since 2005 he has been Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Information at the Politecnico di Milano. He is involved in the teaching for the courses of "Foundations of Optical Communications", “Technologies for Optical Transmission”, and “Electromagnetic fields and optics” in the curricula of the Telecommunication Engineering Laurea. He carries on teaching activities in specialization courses for companies involved in the telecommunication field (for example Telecom Italia, Infostrada, Pirelli Cavi e Sistemi, Italtel). In the period 2000-2001 he was Faculty Director of the Specialist Training Master “Optical communication systems and networks” organized by Poliedra – Politecnico di Milano, Milan. He is author of more than 100 publications on international journals and conference proceedings and of 16 international patents in the field of optical systems and devices. He is Editor of the book “InfraRed holography for optical communication: technique, materials and devices” published on "Topics in Applied Physics" series (Springer-Verlag Ed.) in 2002. He is Technical Program Committee Member of IEEE ICC ONS – Optical Networks and Systems Symposium, and Technical Program Committee Member of IEEE GlobeCom ONSS – Optical Networks and Systems Symposium. He is Executive Committee Member of FOTONICA – National Conference on photonic techniques in Telecommunications. Since 2007 he has been Secretary of the Specialistic Group of Photonics and Electrooptics of AICT (Italian Association for the Information and Communication Tecnology). He partecipates to national and international research projects and he is Technical Leader of research activites financially supported by many private companies (for example Alcatel-Lucent, Prysmian Cables and Telecom Systems, ERSE). His scientific interests, always devoted to the analysis of propagation impairments in optical fibers, is currently focused to the study and the experimentation of optical transmission systems with high spectral efficiency (for example based on multilevel modulation formats). His interest includes also fiber-optic sensors (both for concentrate and for distributed measurement).
