Gianluca Bardaro is a fourth year PhD student at Politecnico di Milano, where he also obtained a bachelor and master degree in computer engineering. Starting from his master thesis he worked on robotics, mostly on autonomous off-road vehicles, with a particular focus on software development and architectural aspect. His PhD work revolve around how to make robotic development more accessible to the different actors involved. This is done by exploiting various techniques, from model-based development and automatic code generation, to support designers in creating complex robot architectures and to streamline the work of component developers, to ontology-based approaches, to model the capability of the robot and create an abstraction layer that can be used by high-level applications to interface with the robot. Given his strong background in software development for robots, he has been involved in multiple robotic projects, from GRAPE, an agricultural autonomy robot for vineyard application, to Plug&Bench, an ITP of the RobMoSys project for the development of reusable benchmarking approaches, and more recently, SciRoc, the first ERL Smart city and robotic challenge. Currently, while working on finalising his PhD, he is working as a research assistant at the Knowledge Media Institute (The Open University).
