BROFFERIO SERGIO CESARE VITTORIO
Retired professors
Sergio Cesare BROFFERIO (born in 1940) received his Master in Electronic Engineering in 1964 at Politecnico di Milano. He worked as technical staff at a few Italian Electronic and Computer Companies and in 1968 he joined Politecnico di Milano as Junior Researcher, in 1972 he got the tenure as Teaching Assistant, position hold until 1980 when he was promoted Associate Professor. In 1986 he run for a position as Full Professor of Telecommunication and was assigned to the Politecnico di Bari where he taught, did scientific and management work until 1989 when he had his tenure at Politecnico di Milano. His teaching activity has covered from 1972 to 2002 mainly courses of Applied Electronics (Analog and Digital) for Telecommunications and gradually shifted toward more general courses at the Master level as Image Processing (1993-1998), Pattern Recognition (since 1999) and Basics of Fundamentals of Signal Theory at the Bachelor level since 2001. He is also giving, since 2004, a PhD course on Neural Network and Fuzzy Logic for Pattern Recognition. Research activity His research activity has always been a theory and design mixture: he started in 1969 with improvements in phase locked loops for TV demodulation. He developed video compression algorithms, designed and coordinated the implementation of a 2Mbit/s video coder for the Italian Telecommunications satellite “Sirio” in the 70’s. He became convinced that technology is the bottleneck of most technical advances, so he shifted his interests to the design of high speed CMOS circuits and concurrent Digital Signal Processing architectures. From the late 80’s he switched his scientific interests to Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic for applied Signal Processing, specifically Speech and Image Recognition. The research activity became strongly application oriented in the decade 993-2003 as he was engaged in specific projects of Politecnico di Milano: first telepresence teaching in coordination also with European Research Programs (BIC from 1995 to 1999) and then as responsible of the Centre of the Politecnico di Milano for Scientific Cinematography and Visual Communication where he evaluated, among other items, the performances of speech recognition systems for academic lectures. Since 2004 he switched his interests to photovoltaic energy where he applies his experiences to three specific subjects: estimation of the solar potential for urban communities, performance evaluation of the main photovoltaic technologies and of techno-economics issues. A software product for estimation of the solar potential for urban areas is available. Since 2007 a self-powered remote testing instrument for two photovoltaic modules is being developed and prototyped. The system is motivated by the need of having at disposal real comparative data for the effective design of a PV system. Since 2008 a study for the combined optimisation of the structure and technology of large photovoltaic tiles has been started. Other activities Sergio Brofferio has been involved in some management tasks of Politecnico di Milano: Administration Counci (1984-1986), Dean of a Technical Centre (1999-2003) and Teaching Commissions. In the 80’s and 90’s was involved in European Research (BIC, COST) and Industrial (IVIC,DELTA) Programs. He is member of EURASIP (European Association of Signal Processing), AEI (Associazione Elettrotecnica Italiana) and ISES (International Solar Energy Society).
