Before, he was a research fellow (assegnista di ricerca) at the Politecnico di Milano and, even before that, a research fellow at the University of Trento. At the University of Trento, he obtained his PhD in Computer Science and Telecommunications in 2016 with a thesis entitled: "Secure Business Process Engineering: A Socio-Technical Approach". At the same university, he also obtained bachelor's and master's degrees. During his PhD, he made three visitings at: Bournemouth University (UK), SAP Research Center (DE) and Imperial College (UK). Since 2020 he has been a visiting researcher at Bournemouth University. His research interests focus on cybersecurity and privacy, particularly on the design of secure socio-technical systems. His research areas range from the definition of methods for the design of secure technologies, such as the design of secure smart contracts for blockchains, to methods for the creation of nudging systems that allow improving the security-related behaviors of the people involved in socio-technical systems. He is also interested in the impact that security may have on people and the environment.
Mattia has published over 40 papers, including 6 book chapters, 8 papers in journals, 14 articles in scientific conferences and various papers in workshops and forums. He has a dense network of collaborations, with more than 80 co-authors (Scopus data). Mattia is the leader of the working group on security and privacy of the Health Big Data project, he is the task leader of the EU Horizon TEADAL project. He was the work package leader in the EU H2020 PACAS project, and has been involved in other European projects including Aniketos, VisiOn, DITAS. He is actively involved in the scientific community: he is part of the organization of international conferences and workshops, he is part of the editorial board of journals. He has participated in numerous conferences as a speaker, including CAiSE and RE, and organized and held two tutorials on the design of secure socio-technical systems. Mattia teaches a doctoral course at the University of Trento (Security and Privacy in Socio-Technical Systems), a course for the bachelor’s course at the Politecnico di Milano (Digital Technologies 1) a course for the bachelor’s course from the Politecnico di Milano (Software Engineering - Final Exam).
