The team of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano, made up of the Computer Science & Engineering student Luca De Martini and Profs. Alessandro Margara and Gianpaolo Cugola, won the Performance Award in the 2022 DEBS Grand Challenge.

The competition took place in the context of the 16th ACM International Conference on Distributed and Event-Based Systems (DEBS 2022), held in Copenhagen from the 27th to the 30th of June 2022.

This year’s DEBS Grand Challenge focused on real-time processing of market data. In the data set, about 5000+ financial instruments were being traded on three major exchanges over the course of a week. The goal of the challenge was to efficiently compute specific trend indicators and detect patterns resembling those used by real-life traders to decide on buying or selling on the financial markets.

The DEIB team won the challenge with the paper “DEBS Grand Challenge: Analysis of Market Data with Noir”, which presents a solution based on Noir, a distributed data processing framework developed at Politecnico di Milano able to analyse millions of events per second and deliver answers with a latency of few milliseconds.
