Sommario
On October 24th, 2024 at 12.30 pm the seminar titled "Beyond Software and Data: Human Labor and Natural Resources Behind AI" will take place at Politecnico di Milano, Room B.2.4 (Building 14).
Like any other technology, Artificial Intelligence is a social production. The usual explanation of AI as a technical combination of data, algorithms, and computing can conceal that it relies heavily on human labour and natural resources. The pilling-up of these economic factors is currently driven by big tech companies, which are placed at the top of the AI techno-economic system and the innovation in this field.
This lecture explores the significance and implications of such an AI value chain regarding economic and environmental justice, inviting us to learn about a less-known dimension of our interactions with these systems.
Edemilson Paraná is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at LUT University, Finland, where he leads the Research Group on Economy, Technology and Society (GETS). He has lectured and published extensively on the Digital Economy and the Political Economy of Artificial Intelligence.
