On June 20th, 2023 at 11.30 am Andrea Toreti, senior scientist at the European Commission Joint Research Centre, will give a seminar on "Concurrent climate extremes: impacts and adaptation" in DEIB Alario Room (Building 21).
The increase in frequency and intensity of climate extremes poses a threat for all key socio-economic sectors as well as the ecosystems. The emergence of concurrent extremes and compound events has shown the limitations of current approaches to characterize risk, design and test sustainable adaptation strategies. New tools are needed to deal with such complexity, including the cascading effects and the shocks concurrent extremes may induce. Challenges, emerging ideas as well as recent efforts in developing new methodological and modelling approaches will be discussed.

Biografia
Andrea is a senior scientist at the European Commission Joint Research Centre where he coordinates the European and Global Drought Observatories of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Andrea graduated in Mathematics at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and got a Ph.D. in Climate Sciences at the University of Bern. His research has been focusing on climate extremes, climate change and variability, risk assessment and adaptation strategies especially in agriculture, statistical climatology. Andrea co-chairs the EU Task Group on Water Scarcity and Drought, the working group on modelling of the ITU-WMO-UNEP Focus Group on AI for natural disaster management, and he is a member of the UNCCD Science Policy Interface. Andrea got several awards for his scientific work and his science for policy activities.
