Project abstract
SurgAid: New methods for diagnosis and support in mitral valve surgery repair procedures based on the integration of finite element modelling and 4D echocardiographic advanced image processing.
The aim of the SurgAid project is to develop and apply new methods for diagnosis and support in mitral (MV) surgery repair procedures, based on the combined analysis and integration of finite element models (FEM) approach with the patient-specific quantification of 4D valvular anatomy by advanced image processing of echocardiographic images.
Several algorithms for tissue tracking were created to semi-automatically quantify the mitral valve annulus and papillary muscles motion during the heart cycle in each specific patient. This information was used as constraint to guide the evolution of the relevant patient-specific FEM MV model simulating valve closure during systole, from which novel information about leaflet strain distribution ahs been extracted and correlated with pathology.
