Emeritus Professor of Politecnico di Milano.

Maurizio Dècina is professor of telecommunications at the Department of Electronics and Information. A 1943 native of Pescasseroli, Italy, Dècina received the Dott. Ing. degree in electronics engineering from the University of Rome in 1966. He began his career at the SIP Headquarters (today Telecom Italia), where he was involved in the introduction of digital transmission facilities for voice and data services. In 1976 he joined the Infocom Department of the University of Rome, where he worked on the early design of the customer access to the ISDN. From 1983 to 1987 he was executive Director of R&D in Italtel in Milan, and contributed to the development of the Linea UT digital switching system. In 1988 he joined the Politecnico di Milano, where he was Director of the CEFRIEL research consortium until 2003, and has been active in ATM and IP switching research. In the early 80s and 90s he worked also as a scientific consultant for AT&T Bell Laboratories in Naperville, Illinois, in the field of exploratory broadband packet voice and photonic switching. Today, his interest is focused on Internet evolutions, networking security, and interoperability of future information infrastructures. Throughout his career, Prof. Dècina has been active in the international telecommunications community. From 1972 to 1988 he was Vice Chairman of Study Group XVIII in the CCITT (today ITU-T) and contributed to the development of speech coding, transmission, data communications, signaling, and ISDN standards. From 1991 to 1997 he was Editor in Chief of the EUREL/AEI publication European Transactions on Telecommunications. From 1984 to 1988 he was Senior Editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. Prof. Dècina was the President of the IEEE Communications Society for the years 1994-1995. In 1986 he was appointed Fellow of IEEE, “for contributions to digital communications and to voice/data packet switching”, in 1997 he received the IEEE Award in International Communications, “for leadership and contributions to international network development and for fostering international technical cooperation”, and in year 2000 the IEEE Third Millennium Medal Award, “for outstanding contributions to the field of communication technology”. Since 1977, Prof. Dècina acted as a professional consultant for ITU and for several small, medium and large information and communication technology companies. He was also a non-executive member of the Board of Directors of such companies, among them: Telecom Italia, Italtel, and Tiscali. He was also the founder of some start-ups, such as: ICT Consulting and Securmatics.
