The research group coordinated by Prof. Luciano Baresi from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano won the Best Paper Award for the paper "NEPTUNE: Network- and GPU-aware Management of Serverless Functions at the Edge" by Luciano Baresi, Davide Yi Xyan Hu, Giovanni Quattrocchi, and Luca Terracciano, presented at the SEAMS 2022 - 17th Symposium on Software Engineering for Adaptive and Self-Managing Systems.

Edge computing enables low application response times by bringing the computational power closer to the users. The paper proposes NEPTUNE, a platform that optimizes application response times in edge networks. In particular, NEPTUNE reduces response time by minimizing both network and computing latency. Network latency is reduced by scheduling applications close to their users while computation is accelerated by allocating computing resources (both CPU and GPU) dynamically. Experiments demonstrate a significant reduction in terms of response time, network overhead, and resource consumption compared to three well-known approaches.
