Crowd4SDG is a research project funded by the European Commission that explores how citizen science can monitor the approach to sustainable development goals (SDGs) and studies how basic innovation can facilitate the achievement of these goals.
As a part of this project, each year the #Open17Challenge addresses some of the 17 sustainable development goals identified by the United Nations involving the younger generations.
The subject of this year's challenge is the impact of climate change on gender inequality. Extreme weather conditions such as floods and droughts are on the rise and often affect local communities in ways that aggravate gender inequality. For example, due to floods, many villages could be evacuated and women will have to travel more to find drinking water for their families.
The #Open17WaterClimateGender challenge focuses on SDG n. 5 (gender equality) and n. 13 (climate action) and is open to high school and university students aged between 16 and 26.
To participate, a project that addresses both issues using crowdsourcing must be submitted by 30 September 2021. The project can concern one's own community, one's region, one's country or the whole world.
The fifty winning teams will have the opportunity to participate in an exclusive online coaching program organized by experts from the best European research laboratories. Five of the teams that complete the coaching program will be able to participate in a workshop organized by CERN in Geneva and the representatives of the two best teams will be invited to present their projects directly to the United Nations.
