Abstract
This seminar offers a critical examination of Supply and Use Tables (SUTs), which constitute a foundational element of the System of National Accounts (SNA). The presentation will illustrate both the analytical potential and the interpretative challenges associated with these tables, especially when they are applied outside of their original accounting framework.Starting with a structural analysis of SUTs, the seminar will address the significance of key components—such as value added measured at basic versus purchaser prices, and the treatment of taxes and subsidies—and how misinterpretation of these elements can lead to misleading analytical conclusions.
A particular focus will be placed on the conceptual distinction between the ex-post accounting identities embedded in the SNA and the ex-ante behavioral identities used in macroeconomic models. By exploring these issues, the seminar aims to uncover the conceptual and methodological tensions that arise when national accounting frameworks are employed in hybrid applications, including environmental and energy modelling.
Through this exploration, the seminar encourages a more informed and critical use of national accounts data in quantitative impact assessment and sustainability analysis.
