Abstract

Power systems and distribution networks are at a critical juncture, necessitating an urgent transition to support distributed generation. This shift is crucial for accommodating the increase in renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, necessary to withstand global climate change mitigation policies. As we look to the future, power grids must adopt innovative control and automation systems that can effectively meet contemporary energy demands to achieve this transformation. These new advanced, intelligent, and reliable grids must be capable of tackling the growing uncertainties they will face, on the one hand, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy production and, on the other, due to the latter's delocalization and consequent communication challenges, including delays, dropouts, and potential adversarial attacks. Emerging distributed and hierarchical architectures are promising strategies for managing these networks' increasing complexity and scale; however, they must also develop robust solutions to address uncertainties effectively. The innovative approaches being developed are theoretically robust and practically viable, as they are rigorously tested on real case studies to demonstrate their effectiveness and pave the way for a more resilient and adaptable energy future.
