Project abstract

The i-RASE project aims to design, build, test, and implement the first radiation detector capable of real-time analysis of every individual event, with transformative potential for photonics applied to medical imaging, industrial inspection, space science instrumentation, environmental monitoring, and other advanced sectors.

Specifically, the project will develop artificial neural networks inspired by physical principles, designed to fully process signals from the sensors and measure radiation interactions in real time. This pioneering approach will be compacted into an integrated solution, where the signal processing system is embedded directly into the hardware, forming an all-in-one module for radiation detection. The result will be a low-cost, low-power device capable of generating intelligent radiation data with unprecedented accuracy and speed.

To ensure that this intelligent system complies with existing standards and regulations, the project must address new challenges that require a rethinking of photonics, based on interdisciplinary and cross-sector expertise. In response to these demands, i-RASE brings together some of the world’s leading researchers and companies in photonics, detector physics, signal processing, neural networks, and digital hardware design, in a high-risk, high-reward research initiative that aims to establish a new paradigm for intelligent radiation detection.
